The Miraculous Madonna (Rue du Bac)
The Miraculous Medal of Our Lady of Rue du Bac originated in Paris in 1830, following the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to the young novice Saint Catherine Labouré in the chapel of the Daughters of Charity, now the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal.
On the front, Mary is depicted standing on a globe while crushing a serpent, symbolizing victory over evil. On the reverse appear the “M” surmounted by a cross, the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, and the twelve stars.
Rapidly spreading throughout the world, the Miraculous Medal has become one of the most beloved Marian symbols: a sign of faith, protection, and grace.
