Florentine Gold Florin Necklace

Necklace featuring the medal of the Florentine Gold Florin, crafted in 925 sterling silver.

The name derives from the fleur-de-lis engraved on the coin, the historic symbol of the city of Florence.

Created in Florence in 1252, the Gold Florin became the leading gold currency in Europe throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, comparable in influence and circulation to today’s euro. Minted in 24-carat gold (3.54 grams), it featured the Florentine lily on one side and Saint John the Baptist, Florence’s patron saint, on the other.

Thanks to the strength of Florence’s banking system, the Florin became the “dollar” of the Middle Ages, facilitating international trade and shaping the economic history of Europe.
