The Holy Rosary, considered a powerful weapon against the Devil, is a prayer composed of five sets of ten Hail Marys each. It takes its name from "crown of roses": this reference to the Marian flower par excellence symbolizes the Hail Mary itself.
Over time, it became meaningful to adorn statues of the Virgin with a crown of roses, representing the "beautiful and fragrant" prayers dedicated to her. From this inspiring gesture, the idea of using a string of beads, thus forming the "crown," to guide meditation and the recitation of prayers was born.
